Except For the In Vitro Experiment on Antioxidant Capability, Recent Trials Prove Ergothioneine’s Benefits for Use in Brain Health and Cognition, Heart Health, Kidney Protection and Liver Health.
November 29th,2021 Nanjing, China – NNB Nutrition(https://nnbnutrition.com/), a leading global ingredient-focused biotech company looked at all the possibilities of MitoPrime®
(its patented L-Ergothioneine), starting from cell to organ.
Ergothioneine is a thiol/thione molecule, avidly taken up from the diet by humans and other animals through a transporter, OCTN1, and accumulates to high levels in certain tissues. In 2005, Ergothioneine Transporter (ETT/OCTN1) is discovered. Concentrations of EGT are closely correlated to OCTN1 mRNA expression.
Dr. Joseph Evans, former principle investigator for Novartis Pharmaceuticals explained the importance of OCTN1: “it helps EGT to penetrate mitochondria. As an agent, the mitochondria-targeted scavenger or redox-active molecule should be bioavailable, entering the cell and accumulate inside mitochondria, and can ameliorate oxidative stress.”
NNB Nutrition commissioned an In Vitro study in the US. The principle investigator from the research group who conducted the study announced “L- Ergothioneine shows strong antioxidant capacity and is able to enter into living cells and protect them from free radical stress.”
EGT function as a physiological antioxidant. Closer examination of the distribution of EGT in the body reveals that the compound is not only accumulated in cells, but also organs and secretions predisposed to high levels of oxidative stress, such as heart, brain, liver, kidneys, etc.
Brain Health and Cognition - Supplementation with EGT dose-dependently protected cells against apoptotic death. In humans, plasma ET levels were found to be significantly decreased in subjects with mild cognitive impairment, which could happen by multiple mechanisms, such as OCTN1 transporter activity.
Heart Health - Studies showed that EGT might protect the heart by countering the harmful oxidation of myoglobin, helping to prevent damage to the heart muscle.
Kidney Protection – People with kidney issue may have lower blood EGT levels, causing increased oxidative damage. EGT may help decrease this by accumulating in the kidney.
Liver Health - EGT pretreatment protects the liver from injury by over-expression of heat shock proteins and the subsequent suppressing lipid peroxidation.
“We began series of Study Trials with L-Ergothioniene in 2020,” said Kylin Liao, NNB’s founder. “We will continue our investigative pursuit into Ergothioneine’s panoply of benefits including heart health, cognitive improvement, and immune health, mitigating the long term effects of extreme viruses such as COVID-19 as well!”

Yue Opera, also known as Shaoxing Opera, is the second most popular Chinese opera genre worldwide. The city of Shaoxing in East China's Zhejiang Province is the birthplace of Yue Opera. This tranquil and beautiful Chinese city has provided rich soil for the rise, development, and progress of the Yue Opera. If you have a chance to visit Shaoxing, you will often hear the melodies of Yue Opera in this city.
In recent years, with the development of social media and short videos, in particular, more and more Chinese viewers choose to record their lives and post their stories online. In a video posted by a local blogger in Shaoxing, whose name is "Yue Zhou Dear Auntie" (Yue Zhou is the name of Shaoxing city in ancient China), the protagonist sings a piece of Yue Opera song in both Chinese and English: "I have a smart and admirable little sister in my family..." The song and its lyrics have attracted many foreign viewers online and have left them a deep impression.
Shaoxing City, also known as the Cultural City of East Asia, is featured in its preservation of the diversity and inclusiveness of traditional Chinese culture.
